    What's up?
Although it might be interesting to see who wrote letters of protest for proposed and passed game and fish law changes for this year, the problem has been addressed in a story at the NCS web site.

    Please see: http://www.northcarolinasportsman.com/details.php?id=1128

The story kinda makes clear even though letters of protest were written, the Commission could have had all the proposed game and fish laws put into effect THIS SEASON if it had understood the process and offered the proposals as TEMPORARY RULES this year.

But that said, glad to see you are taking time to see who wrote what and what they said. A story in the News&Observer already has noted the majority of letters came from individuals and only 28 from the NC Bowhunters Association. Lessee, 28 of 200 letters works out to 14 percent of protest letters signed by ALLEGED NCBA members. NCBA guys have noted some people are CLAIMING to be NCBA members but are NOT on the group's membership list.

If you can post the letters it would be helpful. I am very interested to see if there are any arguments that are being held in common between animal rights types and NCBA.

Iím sorry I have to put my 2 cents in on this. So here it goes and please donít get upset with me I hope you understand. I think we as hunters should ban hunting all together for 5 years we shouldnít kill any thing or catch a single fish. That would make everyone happy. If we quit hunting all those beautiful deer would make a beautiful car worthless and who cares if we spend 30,000 or more on it that would just help the man at the body shop make more and contribute to our economy our Insurance wouldnít do anything but double maybe triple thatís all. Donít forget about how the deer would keep your grass in check and your bushes and flowers cut for you. Then there are the hogs they sure are pretty and well groomed animals they also will keep your yard freshly turned up so you will have holes to fill up and rake out that would make for good exercise. My point is that if it was not for hunters the wildlife would take over and we would be in a mess the population is increasing every year and we are killing more animals than ever. The problem is the tree huggers donít even like killing bugs. I say we turn some flees, roaches, and misquotes loose in their house and see if they kill them. I promise they will kill them and thatís the same as hunting all they are wanting to do is reduce the population for their comfort and hunters enjoy what theyíre doing. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and we have the freedom to live our lifeís the way we want I may not understand or believe the same things but Iím not going to try to change what you believe in. As for the NCBA donít let a few people give the group a bad name always remembers Iím sure there is some on in your family that is screwed up and you donít want to be compared to them. And no I am not a member but I have always said if someone wants to hunt on Sunday thatís there chose not mine all I know they want see me in a tree stand on Sunday. All I can say is that we are all hunters and if someone is doing something wrong then raise a stink. If not let it go. I have always sad observe, overlook, and ignore stupid people they canít help it itís in there DNA. Just think the next time you see someone stupid that at one time they where the fastest and the strongest swimmers just think how it could have ended up.

JUST AS I HAD EXPECTED ALL OF THESE LETTERS WERE VIRTUALLY FORM LETTERS. NO ORIGINALITY AT ALL. SOME WERE PROBABLY FROM PETA PEOPLE.

NCBA ALSO FILLED THE SLOTS. AFTER LOOKING AT MEMBERSHIP NAMES AND COMPARING THEM THEY ARE THERE,TOO.

I AM TRYING TO GET CONVERTED OVER TO FIT THIS FORUM BUT HAVE NOT HAD ANY LUCK YET.

I HAD A CONVERSATION WITH ONE OF THE MEMBERS OF THE NCW BOARD AND THEY ALSO WERE A LITTLE LAX, BUT PROMISE MORE ALACRITY NEXT YEAR.

STARNES-I RARELY GET MAD OR UPSET. SOME OF YOUR POINTS WERE WELL TAKEN. BUT YOU KNOW-A FIELD STARTS WITH A SINGLE BLADE OF GRASS SO TOO,FOR A TREE. SO I DON'T THINK YOU CAN ALWAYS TURN YOUR BACK AS YOU SUGGEST. AFTER ALL-A THERMONUCLEAR REACTION STARTS WITH A SINGLE ELECTRON.

    BE VIGILENT!

You are absolutely correct a field dose start with a blade of grass but someone has to plant the seed and if you have ever read the back of that seed pack it will tell you the contents of that bag and all bags of seeds contain weed seed. We all know that the weeds in the field need to be sprayed with roundup to controle them and then the field will be covered in beautiful grass and plants. In my option All these anti hunting and animal rites groups need to live there life and let us live ours. I will be the first to tell you I DO NOT eat all I kill. I know that sounds bad but what I donít eat goes to someone that will eat it and the people I give my meat to really enjoys it and appreciates it because If they didnít get it from me they would not have much if any meat to eat throughout the year. The animal rights groups need to read the bible and they will see in there where god provided us with this wonderful world and we are to be stuarts of the land meaning we manage it. If we donít wild life will take over. Hogs are a good example of that because studies shows to keep a health hog population meaning keeping the population under control you have kill 7 out of every 10 born. If not they will take over and get diseases. So letís do what we are supposed to do and be good stuarts of the land and keep hunting and fishing And if that means a cross bow or on Sunday.

STARNES-YEP THERE MAY BE WEEDS,BUT IF WE IGNORE THEM THEY WON'T GO AWAY. IN BOTANY I LEARNED THAT ONE OF THE REASONS FOR THEIR PROLIFIC SPREADING IS THEIR CARBON STRUCTURE IS BASED ON 4 WHERE AS 'GOOD' PLANTS ARE BASED ON 6. THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT GOING AWAY BELIEVE ME,AND THEY ARE VERY VOCAL. SO IGNORE IF YOU MUST(I TRY TO AVOID PEOPLE THAT VEX MY SOUL) BUT I WILL NOT.

VIPER-YEAH-PEOPLE EATING TASTY ANIMALS. HOW'S THE PRACTICE GOING? I SAW A REALLY,REALLY NICE BUCK IN THE BEANFIELD AT MY UNCLE'S IN MOORE COUNTY LAST WEEKEND. MAYBE I'LL GET LUCKY?

    Dead On!
The bow is dead on right now Frank. After having it tuned professionally, I don't think there will be any ugly back bone shots this year. Funny thing though. I set the Iron Tree out today and as I sat atop my master piece....I had a doe come walking up and she had to check it out. She didn't know I was sitting on top of it filming her the whole time. Guess you could say it's in a good spot!Funny thing....I was in my work clothes and I was sweaty and stinky. Had the wind in my favor!

ďAll I can say is that we are all hunters and if someone is doing something wrong then raise a stink. If not let it goes.Ē In this situation they are trying to change hunting laws that donít affect them because most of the people protesting normally donít hunt. The ones that do donít respect others that have different beliefs. My dad hunts with a crossbow and use to hunt with a bow 30+ years ago but had to stop because he could not pull it back due to his shoulder. At the same time he couldnít get a disability permit so he couldnít hunt during bow season. There are lots of people that are not able to pull back a bow because they are not strong enough such as my wife and my daughter therefore they canít bow hunt and they are healthy. That leaves them out during bow season. And yes I do think cross bows should be legal to any one I will still use my Matthews regard less. This whole stink is like saying I shouldnít be a christen because someone else is catholic or Mormon. And thatís wrong. Also some people work 6 days a week and Sunday is the only day they have off should you tell a working man he is not allowed to hunt? I donít think so. NCWRC holds meetings on proposed changes every year and these things where sent for change I donít know why they didnít work out but at this point they didnít. Letís work on it next year. The thing that bothers me is I hunt in a county that has a doe season that last 5 days at the begging of the season and 5 at the end. Donít sound too bad but I sat in a stand and my dad sat in another one evening last wear and we saw 48 deer from the 2 stands not a single buck of any size nothing. We canít even manage our farm there is too many. What do we do there that was in the books too but itís not in the digest this year.

Too many deer, too little motivation
This state has too many deer, period. While that's great for meat hunting, it's not great for farmers, gardeners, drivers, or birds of prey in some areas. The manner of taking deer and the number of days we can hunt them should be expanded, within the bounds of what the science tells us is happening with the herd. Period. Right now the central and eastern parts of the state could benefit from taking some extra does, and if crossbows and Sunday hunting help do that, then sign me up. I like my longbow, recurves, and compound. I know I'm going to like the crossbow, too. Let's do whatever we have to do to get this stuff through, and hopefully get more hunters in the field (and away from Nintendo, X-box, YouTube, Twitter, and all that other crap making us fat, lazy, and dumb).

You CAN kill deer anytime in certain situations
    Mr. Starnes:

You can kill deer ANYTIME with a depredation permit -- and in some instances you can kill 'property-destroying' wildlife (like deer that eat your crops) without a permit.

Permits are pretty easy to get. Go to the WRC web site and search for Depredation Permits or call 919 707-0050 or call your county's Cooperative Extension (Ag) office.

If you don't have a depredation permit, you have to safely dispose of the animals at the property where you killed them (you can't keep the venison, antlers, etc.). But if you have a depredation permit, you can utilize the body parts (eat the venison or give it to another individual or group).

But you have to get authorization for a permit through a Wildlife Damage Control Agent, who are NOT WRC employees (they may charge a small fee to check out your situation.)

You can find a list of Wildlife Damage Control agents at the WRC web site.

Of, if you know a local WRC biologist or enforcement officer, you can contact him or her for help.

If you take either of these actions, you certainly need to contact your local WRC enforcement officer and let him know, for example, if you're shooting nuisance deer during June, why you are doing it or that you have a depredation permit. That way you won't get a ticket for hunting out of season.

It's obviously a somewhat complicated process, but the permit prevents people from shooting deer out of season for trophies or killing deer to sell meat to restaurants, etc.. People have shot deer in January or other months before the season was open or after the season was closed for those reasons.

CastNBlast6 We have 475 acre farm and ncwc said we had to have 2000 acres of consecutive land to get doe tags. I didnít know that it may be covered under the depredidation stuff but I will call before the day is out. Thanks for the info hope it works. I honestly put out 1100 pounds of corn at 2 stands year before last at this farm and that was between 2 stands mostly. Canít afford that anymore. So we hunted the fields last year and put up feeders.

    On doe tags
    Mr. Starnes:

I went online at the WRC web site and didn't see anything about a minimum amount of land required to get depredation permits or to kill 'property-destroying' animals.

Now doe tags may be an entirely different matter. I think that's tied into the Deer Management Assistance Program, which is not the same program as depredation permits. DMAP means (I think) you have to have a certain amount of land before the WRC will come out and evaluate your land for excess deer, then they issue you doe tags, if needed.

So I think deer tags and depredation are different -- I may be wrong, but there's nothing about minimum acreage at the WRC web site in the info about depredation permits.

    Thank God!
Thank God that I live in the Eastern Zone.....unlimited does and 4 bucks. I will keep you posted on the count. Sunday hunting is and will be as natural as fishing on a pond on Sunday. Crossbows will be allowed and should be but, I will stay with my Hoyt TrykonXL. My cousin under permit hunts and has been hunting the crossbow but it's a little hard to cock in a climber. It's a one shot deal as far as climbers go! Me I carry 6 arrows and can easily use them all if needed. Can't wait until that 'no daily bag limit passes', I'll get to try all 6 out....cus' brother we are eat up with does! Cross bow permits are as easy as getting a hunting license if your limitation is a physical and medical limitation, but it won't matter anyway come 2010. Buy your crossbow now, while they're still reasonably priced. Bow shops stocked up before some butt heads stopped it for this year. Frank....sounds like your son shoots like me....well the 60 yards thing but, how does he pull 90 pounds? 72 just about dis-locates my shoulder....he must be a studd and is leaving old goats like us behind...lol! That's ok...we'll just out think them young ones!

Thank you all, brothers of the bone collectors on this web site for great info and comradery! We all are fortunate for what GOD has provided! Be safe out there!

P.S. CastNBlast6....thank you for all you do and all your help....tell the NCSM to give you a raise!
