  • 42' Redfish-from a Kayak

Lowcountry fishing was tough this past weekend. The baitfish were plentiful but the bite was slow in Johnson Creek and Machete Flats. It wasn't easy to keep the toadfish, skates, and small sharks off the bait, but kayak angler Dalton Reames of Sumter caught the fish of a lifetime. Reames landed a 42-inch redfish while trolling a mud minnow through Johnson Creek, making what started out as a slow day into a memorable one.

The 3.5 foot long redfish made several runs, pulling line out each time it came within sight of the kayak. Reames played it cool, allowing his Ambassadeur 6500's drag to do its job while he let the drum play itself out. After pulling the kayak around for a few minutes, the fish finally tired and Reames was able to haul it atop his 12' Wilderness Systems Tarpon. Reames then spent several minutes in the water reviving the fish, which finally swam off under its own power, none the worse for the battle.
