  • Pacu Caught in Lexington County

The South Carolina DNR has reported a red-bellied pacu was recently caught out of Gibson Pond in Lexington County. Cousins of piranha, pacu are popular aquarium fish that often outgrow their homeowners' welcome and are sometimes illegally released into public waters. Pacu are native to South American rivers, but are not native to South Carolina and are considered an invasive species and a nuisance to native fish and plants.

If you catch a non-native species like a pacu, report it to the South Carolina DNR and do not re-release the fish into South Carolina's waterways.
