North Carolina and South Carolina Sportsman Magazines ended a successful series of fishing schools at Greenville, N.C., March 18, with the final 2006 seminars for Carolinas anglers. The magazines presented schools at North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Holly Springs, N.C., and culminated at Greenville with a day-long series of classes at South Central High School.
The Greenville school also featured a grand-prize drawing and giveaway of an 18-foot Sea Pro boat, 50-hp Mercury four stroke engine and Road King trailer. Jon Olson of Wendell, who traveled to Greenville to attend the seminars, won the boat but seemed more impressed with the school.
“I really enjoyed it,” he said. “There’s always good information from the instructors. This is the third or fourth year I’ve come to the Sportsman’s fishing schools.”
Olson, 38, a paramedic division chief for Wake County Emergency Services, already owns a Southern Skimmer. Olson’s friend, Brian Phinizy, seemed happier than the winner after the drawing for the boat. Phinizy said he may make an offer for the $14,000 boat-and-trailer package.
Anglers from each of the three NCS/SCS fishing schools were eligible for the boat drawing. Anglers at each school, in addition to enjoying a free on-site-prepared dinner by the Long Bay Artificial Reef Association, also received sample product provided by Betts Tackle, Sea Striker, Got-Cha and Clarkspoon, plus won numerous door prizes. Prizes ranged from Star rods to Betts cast nets to Calcutta lures and tackle and other fishing equipment and clothing.
William “Billy” Igoe, 44, of Winterville, a telecommunications technician for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, won the consolation prize, a full-day offshore fishing trip with Capt. Mike Wells of Raleigh, one of instructors and owner of Intimidator Fishing Charters.

Mike’s Guide Fishing Service), George Beckwith (Down East Guide Service), Greg Voliva (Down East Guide Service), Ray Massengill (Down East Guide Service), John Parks (Team Raymarine), Jerry Dilsaver (NC and SC Sportsman), Rick Bennett (Rod-Man Charters), Maynard Edwards (Yadkin Lakes Guide Service), Mark Dickson (Shallow Minded Guide Fishing), Patrick Bellamy (Little River Offshore Fishing Club), Bryan Williams (Ocean Isle Fishing Center), John Lowder (Nite Ranger Charters), Dennis Outlaw (Bass Pro Shos Pro-Staff), Michael Wells (Intimidator Sportfishing) and Andy Fisher (Go Fish Charters), plus Eric Sincebaugh (Carolina Outdoor Sportsman), David Owens (Road King Trailers), Rodney Crisco (Team Live Systems). Charlie Kingen (Extreme Fishing), Chris Gurley (Topsail Offshore Fishing Club), Harold Rohrback (Bass Pro Shops-Myrtle Beach) and John Knight (Raleigh Salt Water Sportfishing Club).
All-day classes at each school featured freshwater and inshore and offshore saltwater fishing techniques for various species of fish, boat safety, navigation, marine electronics, boat and trailer maintenance, knots, chart reading and cast-net throwing instructions.
