7 game lands now open to expanded coyote/feral hog hunting
Applications for permitted hunting opportunities, including waterfowl hunts, are now available from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.
Sportsmen can obtain applications by visiting the Commission’s website, a Wildlife Service Agent or calling 1-888-248-6834, Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Application deadlines vary, starting in August.
The 2016-17 season offers five new coyote/feral hog hunting opportunities on seven game lands statewide. Permits for these new 3-day hunts provide hunters an opportunity to hunt coyotes and feral hogs at night on Chowan Swamp, Holly Shelter, Suggs Mill Pond, Pee Dee River, R. Wayne Bailey-Caswell, Johns River and Toxaway game lands.
“Rules were modified several years ago to allow hunting of coyotes and feral hogs at night on private lands,” said Isaac Harrold, the Commission’s lands program coordinator. “Since then, we’ve received a number of requests to provide similar opportunities on game lands. We’ll monitor participation in these new hunts, and if demand supports doing so, we’ll look at adding additional hunt opportunities in the future.”
The Permit Hunting Opportunities Program was established by the Commission to provide permit hunting opportunities across the state to licensed hunters. These permits allow for managed participation and provide unique hunting opportunities for special areas or species such as dove, deer, bear, waterfowl, tundra swan, turkey, small game, coyote, feral hog, and furbearer trapping. This program also includes special opportunities for youth and persons with disabilities. The program offers both quota and non-quota (point-of-sale) hunts.
