Zebulon hunter kills trophy buck during 9-minute hunt

The 11-point buck green-scored 128 3/8 inches

Matthew Brewer of Zebulon, N.C. killed an 11-point, 130-class buck in Wake County on Oct. 23 after sitting in his stand for only nine minutes. It’s the first trophy deer he’s killed in several years. And he didn’t even know it existed until it walked out in front of him.

He usually has a pretty good idea of what type of deer are around by using trail cameras to keep a lookout. But he didn’t do that this year.

“I usually run trail cameras every year since I started hunting. But I didn’t mess with them this year. Instead, I just went hunting whenever I got the chance. I’d only seen cowhorns and 4-pointers, plus a doe with a fawn,” said Brewer.

He shot the big buck on 1/4-acre of property behind his house from a stand he put up about three weeks earlier.

Brewer shot the 11-point buck with a 12-gauge slug

“I had seen a buck making a rub right before dark from my other stand. So I set this one up as a bow/shotgun stand facing over the rub. I strapped the stand to a big yellow poplar,” he said.

And once he got in the stand on Oct. 23, things happened quickly.

11-point buck“I got in the stand at 5:46 p.m. Friday. I dropped the buck with a 12-gauge slug at 5:55. I was in the stand nine minutes and harvested my first trophy buck in about four years. After posting on Instagram, a buddy of mine I grew up with messaged me and told me to call him. He also sent four or five trail cam pics (of the buck).

“He had been watching the deer all year. And I never knew it existed until it walked out in front of me at 15 yards,” he said.
