William Chavez’s lucky buck

lucky buck

The morning of Sept. 27 was one that I will never forget. I was planning on going hunting that morning but overslept and didn’t wake up till 7:15. As soon as I woke up and saw the time, I jumped out of bed, grabbed my clothes and out the door I went.

I’m fortunate to hunt down the road from my house in Barnwell, S.C., so I was there by 7:30. As I was walking in, a doe was in the corn pile. She blew at me and trotted off. I hurried up the stand to settle in when I heard another two does behind me blow at me. At this point I was thinking “I’ve been busted by three does; ain’t no way I’m going to see something now.”

I texted my wife telling her what happened and that I was coming home because there was no point for me to stay in the stand. Well as soon as I sent the text, I looked down the shooting lane and this buck had stepped out, giving me the perfect shoot.

I did not hesitate to pull up and shoot, and there it lay at 7:45. It goes to show you that you never what’s going to happen when you’re in the woods.
