Richmond County hunter kills giant 10-point buck

Tyler Brown of Rockingham, N.C. added to the long list of handsome bucks to come out of Richmond County when he pulled the trigger on a 10-point mainframe buck on Nov. 8, 2020. The buck has been green-scored at 153 7/8 inches.

Brown said he watched and waited for three seasons before harvesting the deer. But when the critical moment arrived, he had to battle nerves and a queasy stomach caused by a virus.

On Nov. 2, Brown shot a 130-inch, 8-point buck during a fairly easy hunt. But six days later, he wondered when he would go to the woods again to hunt his No. 1 whitetail target.

“Sunday morning I woke up sick and throwing up,” he said.

However, he checked his wireless cell-cam images and saw the buck he’d coveted has visited his stand at 6:13 that morning. By afternoon, Brown dragged himself outdoors.

Nothing like a nearby trophy buck to cure what ails you

At 3:45 p.m., he climbes his box stand’s ladder steps while holding a new, tack-driving Creedmoor 6.5-mm rifle with a Leupold scope.

At 5:05, Brown spied the deer 160 yards from his perch.

“He came out (of woods) headed for the corn pile,” he said. “He was by himself. I threw up my binoculars and saw his rack.”

Then, Brown threw up again, literally, thanks to his stomach virus.

After collecting himself, the hunter aimed behind the buck’s shoulder, pulled the trigger, and watched the deer run 60 yards before collapsing. This ended his long history with the buck.

“I first saw him on a trail camera in 2018. Then I got a lot of pictures in 2019, probably close to 1000,” he said. “I also saw him five or six times in person. But I let him walk. I had not intention of shooting him because he was only a main-frame eight with split brow tines.”

But by 2020, the buck’s rack had expanded to 10 points with a half-inch drop tine off the right main beam. Brown estimated the deer at 4-years-old.

The rack’s main beams measured 22 7/8 and 22 6/8 inches with G2s of 9 1/8 and 9 0/8 inches. The G3s were 7 3/8 and 8 0/8 inches, and the inside spread totaled 18 1/8 inches. The buck weighed approximately 175 pounds.
