Morgan Berry’s Alamance County velvet birthday buck

It was the opening day of bow season Sept. 14, 2020 in Alamance County. It was also my birthday!

My fiance Dustin had gotten a picture of the buck Saturday morning when we woke up to start getting ready. We decided it would be best to just wait until the afternoon so we didn’t push any deer. He had also gotten a picture of a buck he was after.

It seemed like the deer were moving a little earlier than normal. In hopes of them moving earlier in the afternoon, we stayed out that morning. Well we got in the stand Saturday afternoon running late due to my birthday plans….. Afternoon about 15 minutes of being in the stand two small 4-pointers and a group of does stepped out into the food plot.

Around 7:45, Dustin tapped me on the leg and told me to get ready. The bachelor group that we was waiting on was coming in. I couldn’t see anything. They stayed back in some thick underbrush for what seemed like forever.

Finally a deer we call tall Tex stepped out. Dustin then told me the deer I was wanting would be the next deer to step out, and told me to be ready. As the velvet 8 made his way out of the edge of the tree line, the wind started to shift in the deer’s favor. He was quartering to us and Dustin told me I’d have to take the shot.

In my ear, all I could hear was get as close to his shoulder as I could. I made an iffy shot. But it looked like it put a hurting on the velvet buck. He was running over everything in his path. We heard him crash, but couldn’t see him anymore.

After about 15 minutes we decided to go look at the arrow. And it turns out, practice makes perfect! He didn’t go 55 yards over the ridge. I was excited. I hunted a lot last year, passing up multiple deer trying to get on something decent. It’s my first deer, and on my birthday with a bow. Needless to say I’m hooked!

Dustin still says he was more worked up than I was, haha. But it’s definitely a memory we will hold onto forever. It was the perfect hunt!
