Kenneth Medley’s Wilkes County buck

On October 6th, i climbed up into my tree stand in Ferguson, NC not expecting to see anything honestly. I hadnt had any luck in the past three years. I always had plenty of photos on my camera, but they were always nocturnal.

I had been seeing this deer for 3 months on camera leading up to opening day, but always late at night. Opening day comes up and my wife and i hit the stand with the Killer Instinct crossbow she had just bought me as a surprise for this archery season. Right at the edge of sundown, we hear a crash and out runs this huge 7-pointer. It was the biggest buck i had ever seen in real life, right in front of me.

I was shaking when i took the shot, only to find that i shot low. Crushed, I headed home thinking this buck would never show up at my stand again. My wife assured me that one day he would be back. Sure enough, two weeks later, I climbed back into my stand. I sat in my stand for three hours.

I was texting my wife when I saw something jump about 20 yards in front of me. I looked up to see horns and I didnt take a second thought before i put my crosshairs on him. I fired an Easton Bloodtrail topped with a Carbon Express fixed blade broadhead. I was so afraid that I missed him, I completely bypassed him and went to my wife’s uncles house which was less than a mile away.

About an hour later, he and i went back up to the property to find my first buck laying on the ground close to where i shot him. He weighed over 200 pounds and he was 20-inches tip to tip.

He isn’t a monster, but he was my first buck, the one that almost got away.
