David Byers’ Rutherford County mature 6-point buck

I took this mature 6-point buck on Sept. 18, 2020. I had no history with this deer. (I run trail cameras on my 30-acre property in Ruherford County NC pretty much all year long.)

He showed up on my cameras the first time on the 15th, just three days earlier and immediately went to the top of my hit list. On Friday evening of the 18th, I decided to hunt a ground blind that is just inside the tree line behind my house.

I had four yearling bucks to hang around for pretty much two hours and as the evening was winding down, I decided that I would call it a day, but the yearlings just wouldn’t leave. I took my cell phone out and triggered the flash on the camera a couple of times to encourage them to leave.

I waited a few minutes and was preparing to exit the blind. I looked out thru a small opening in the right side of the blind and saw a buck standing there. I thought one of the yearlings had come back but it dawned on me that this was a bigger buck. It was actually a 2-year-old that was running with the big 6, and immediately I saw that big crab claw rack as the Big 6 stepped out.

Very cautiously, he made his way to the logging road about 25 yards in front of me and stopped broadside. I hit him with the Rage broadhead out of my crossbow right thru both lungs. He went about 40 yards and piled up. My nephew who is a wildlife biologist aged him at 5.5 years old. He weighed in at 190 pounew.
