May is a big month for king mackerel on piers along the coast of Brunswick County, and the action that fishermen on Ocean Crest Pier on Oak Island had on May 10 was a perfect example.

Pier officials reported five kings decked after 2 p.m., including two after 7:30: a 31.7-pounder caught by Jerry Faw of North Wilkesboro and a 20.5-pounder caught by David Whitley of Salisbury.

Two more kings were hooked and lost shortly after Faw and Whitley decked their fish.

According to pier officials, live bluefish were the ticket on a day with winds from the south/southwest at 8 knots and the water temperature around 73 degrees.

The kings landed ranged from 14 pounds to a 37.13-pound fish caught by Lonnie Robinson of Oak Island.

In addition, Whitley also landed a 35-pound cobia earlier in the day.
