November is a great time for speckled trout fishing in the Wilmington area, and Capt. Jot Owens of Jot It Down Fishing Charters is one of the best at catching these fish in the inshore waters at any time of year. Owens offers three tips for angler hoping to cash in on this month’s trout bounty.

Owens notes this month is a seasonal change, and with that comes a run of baitfish. His first tip for catching trout this month is to find creeks and channels off the Intracoastal Waterway with concentrations of baitfish moving through. Look for some type of structure for the fish to gather around in these areas.

“Marsh grass lines, oyster rocks that run into a channel, and drop-offs in channels are all good places to find Speckled trout in November. Almost any grass lines with oysters will hold some trout,” said Owens.

Fishing in areas with current is his second tip for hooking up with trout this month. “You need current flow to catch trout; rising and falling tide can be good for trout. Don’t let the tide keep you from going trout fishing!” said Owens, who added that spots with current and something to break up the current are goldmines. “Look for places where there is a slight current break, and those trout will be close by,” he said.

Tip number three by Owens is to always use fluorocarbon leaders. “The water can get clear – sometimes very clear – around our area in November. I always use fluorocarbon leaders for speckled trout fishing. You will catch more trout using fluorocarbon leaders. Trust me!” said Owens, who relies on 20- and 30-pound test Berkley Pro Spec for his leaders.

As far as lures go, Owens suggests MirrOlures, soft plastic grubs like Berkley Gulp! 3-inch shrimp, and Saltwater Assassin 4-inch Sea Shad. He rigs those grubs on a variety of jig heads, including 1/16-ounce, 1/8-ounce, and 1/4-ounce in red, gray, or black.

Owens operates Jot It Down Fishing Charters, and is such a prolific trout angler, that one of the fishing world’s top trout lure makers, MirrOlure, is making a Capt. Jot Custom MirrOlure paint scheme, which is currently available at Tex’s Tackle in Wilmington. Owens can be reached at 910-233-4139.
