Jason Carter of Snow Camp, aka “jcarter” has won North Carolina Sportsman’s first monthly Bag-A-Buck contest for 2014 with his entry of a big 8-point buck from Alamance County.
Carter, 37, killed the big buck on Sept. 16 and entered it in the contest five days later.
Carter’s monthly prize package includes a year’s subscription to North Carolina Sportsman and a $25 gift certificate to the Sportsman’s online Outdoor Store. In addition, Carter remains eligible for the grand prize, a one-day hunt for two people at Rockingham County’s Willow Oaks Plantation. The grand prize will be presented at the Dixie Deer Classic in Raleigh next March.
Carter had plenty of trail-camera photos of the big buck as it paraded around a 600-acre farm he was hunting.
“I put my father-in-law on the deer on opening day (Sept. 13), but he shot over his back at 30 yards,” said Carter, who didn’t make the same mistake.
“I went the next day we had a good wind — I needed a west wind,” he said. “He stepped out at 20 yards, quartering away, and I shot. He piled up about 65 yards away.”
The buck had come in to feed in a food plot of clover and chicory he had planted.
Carter said the buck weighed 175 pounds on the hoof. It carried a 4x4 rack with a 16-inch inside spread, horns with 6 1/8-inch bases and four tines that ranged from 8 1/2 to 10 inches.
