It’s not time to put your fishing kayaks or rods and reels in storage for the winter just yet. Instead, it’s time to gear up for the YAK Kayak Fishing Shoot Out sponsored by Hooters of Myrtle Beach, which will be held this weekend, Dec. 9 – 10.
This tournament is a pairing up of the Grand Strand’s top kayak fishing guide service, YAK Kayak Fishing and Outdoor Guides, with Hooters of Myrtle Beach, one of the favorite restaurants in the area. And 100 percent of the money generated from the event will benefit the Waccamaw Youth Center and Toys for Tots.
Registration will take place Dec. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Hooters of Myrtle Beach. YAK will put on their Winter Time Kayak Fishing Seminar, then light finger foods will be served, followed by a captain’s meeting to go over rules of the tournament.
If you can’t fish in the tournament but would like to attend the fishing seminar and eat, YAK asks that you bring a toy donation.
On Dec. 10, fishing starts at safe light. Anglers are allowed to fish from any public landing of their choice, and live bait, natural bait, and artificial lures are all legal. Life jackets must be worn throughout the competition, and all fish must be caught on rod and reel from a kayak, SUP, or canoe without assistance from other vessels.
This is a catch-photo-release tournament format, and anglers can begin checking in with their camera cards at 3 p.m. at the Hooters of Myrtle Beach. Check-in closes at 4 p.m. Meals will be provided by Hooters, and at 5 p.m. winners will be announced, along with the presentation of prizes and trophies.
Targeted fish for this tournament are redfish, flounder, and speckled sea trout. A bonus pot is in place for black drum.
