A retirement party involving numerous people on more than one boat took a tragic turn Saturday when one of the boats hit a wave or an unknown object.
Eight people were in the boat that hit the object, and all were thrown from the vessel. Another boat that was part of the same retirement party was able to rescue six of those people, but the other two had still not been found as of late Sunday night.
Several agencies, including the SCDNR, Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, and several fire departments began rescue operations immediately after the accident, which occured near the Short Stay boat landing on the lower lake around 7:30 p.m. By late Sunday, the rescue operation had been changed to a recovery mission, as the two men are presumed dead.
Authorities have not identified the two missing men, other than to say one is a 57-year-old black man, and the other is a 41-year-old white man.
Jacque Bracewell, Jr, was arrested and charged with felony boating under the influence. A judge set bond at $20,000 for Bracewell, who was operating the 35-foot boat when the accident occurred.
