Tim Jones of North Augusta caught only nine bass during the two-day Bassmaster Weekend Series Division 9 championship tournament on Clarks Hill Lake this past weekend, but he still won the event by more than two pounds.

Jones’ catch of 22.11 pounds was anchored by a 7.1-pound linker the second day that he called a “lucky catch.”

"My partner threw a frog out there, and the fish blew up on the frog, and he snatched the frog from her, and I threw the Super Fluke in there and caught her," said Jones, who pocketed more than $2,700.

Jones used shakey heads, Zoom Ol' Monster worms and Flukes, and he spent most of the tournament fishing hydrilla in deep water. He caught only four fish on the first day and was in sixth place, but he made up plenty of ground on the second day.

Leesville's Sean Anderson finished second, and had the opposite kind of luck as Jones. Leading at the end of the first day by more than a pound, Anderson caught only two fish on Sunday, but he still beat out four anglers with two-day limits (10 fish) for second place and $1,362. Anderson had 16.62 pounds on the first day and finished with 19.71. He also took home $160 for the tournament’s big fish, an 8.38-pounder he caught on the first day.

Brian Gunn of Savannah took third place with 19.34 with his 10-fish limit, winning $907. Andy Wicker of Pomaria finished fourth with 17.81, won $650 and finished as the overall points leader for the division. Ron Brown of Charleston took fifth place with 16.31 for his 10 fish and won $440.

In the co-angler division, Buddy Walden of Leesville won with six fish weighing 13.19 pounds, worth $1,276. Sammy Freeman of Irmo finished second and won $639; Travis Malphrus of Ridgeland was third with 9.85; Michael Norris of Myrtle Beach was fourth with 9.08, and Robert Gambrell of Cleveland, Ga., was fifth with 8.67, winning $460.

Eddy Morgan took Big Fish honors on the co-angler side for his 5.29-pounder. The fish was Morgan's lone keeper of the weekend and earned him $75.
